Installing ACADUI

Create a User Profile:

If you work on a shared computer it might be desirable to set up a personal user profile so that your preferences do not affect other users of the machine. Before you install ACADUI start AutoCAD or Intellicad and save the current User Profile (Tools/Options/Profiles) with a suitable name to ensure that you can return to it at any time and after you have set up ACADUI entirely to your satisfaction save the user profile in a suitable name such as your name or as ACADUI.

ACADUI is easily installed:

Installation of ACADUI requires a simple once only addition of program files to your computer or external drive and a small addition to your AutoCAD or Intellicad menu.

User profile changes easy to reverse:

ACADUI does not alter your computer’s registry and all changes are easily reversible.

Install ACADUI for AutoCAD:

These instructions may need to be varied slightly with some older versions of AutoCAD.

  • First save your existing Profile and Workspace in a name you will recognise if you wish to later restore it.
  • Unzip the file “ACADUI.ZIP”  to the root C:\ of your computer’s hard-drive.  Do not change the directory structure of ACADUI.  You should then have C:\ACADUI\LISP.  This is where ACADUI Autolisp files are stored.  There will also be an C:\ACADUI\MYLISP folder with sample files #mylisp.lsp and #myvars.lsp.  You may edit these to autoload your own preferred  lisp functions and system variables but doing so may affect parts of ACADUI.  Keep your own Lisp files in Mylisp folder to avoid loss when ACADUI is updated.
  • You will also find the folders ACADBAK1 and ACADBAK2 that will be used if you activate ACADUI automatic backup.
  • Go to AutoCAD’s Tools >>Options >> Files >> Support File Search Path and add C:\ACADUI\LISP,  C:\ACADUI\ DWGS and C:\ACADUI\MYLISP and move them to the top of the list.
  • If you have previously customised your program edit your existing ACAD.LSP file to include (load “#ACADUI”) as found in the ACAD.LSP file supplied with ACADUI.  If you do not have an existing ACAD.LSP then the ACAD.LSP file in C:\ACADUI\LISP will automatically come into effect.  Make sure that there is not another ACAD.LSP that AutoCAD might find before the one in C:\ACADUI\LISP
  • Go to TOOLS>>Options>>System and confirm that  “Load acad lisp with every drawing.” is checked.
  • Add ACADUI’s Accelerator keys to your existing menu.  Command: MENULOAD >> Browse for ACCELERATORS.MNU  in C:\ACADUI\LISP.  (Easier to find if you click on Files of type: MNS and MNU.)  Then click Load.  Note that it has appeared in the list and click Close.
  • Press F11 to check that accelerators are working.  Type L (for Layer) press [spacebar] then press [spacebar] again.  If ACADUI's Layer dialogue box opens then that’s it.
  • If you wish to use the added security of ACADUI's Autosave mechanism create the folders C:\ACADUI\ACADBAK1 andC:\ACADUI\ACADBAK2 to store your Autosaved files.
  • If you wish to uninstall ACADUI: 1. delete or rename the C:\ACADUI folder.   2. Command: MENULOAD>>ACCELERATORS>>UNLOAD and you will be back to normal
  • Restore your saved profie and you will be back to normal.

Install ACADUI for Intellicad:

ACADUI will be suitable for use with Intellicad 8.  These are DRAFT instructions to be updated.

  • First save your existing Profile and Workspace in a name you will recognise if you wish to later restore it.
  • Unzip the file “ACADUI.ZIP”  to the root C:\ of your computer’s hard-drive.  Do not change the directory structure of ACADUI.  You should then have C:\ICADUI\LISP.  This is where ACADUI Autolisp files are stored.  There will also be C:\ACADUI\ACADBAK1 and C:\ACADUI\ACADBAK2 to store Autosaved drawing files. There will also be C:\ACADUI\MYLISP.  Keep your own Lisp files in Mylisp to avoid loss when ACADUI is updated.
  • Go to Intellicad’s TOOLS\Options \Paths - Files\Templates and add C:\ACADUI\LISP,  C:\ACADUI\ DWGS and C:\ACADUI\|MYLISP and move them to the top of the list.  At the time of writing there is problem with Intellicad's configuration of the LISP folder.
  • If you have previously customized your program edit your existing ICAD.LSP file to include (load “#ACADUI”) as found in the ACADUI version of ICAD>LSP.  If you do not have an existing ICAD.LSP then the ICAD.LSP file in C:\ACADUI\LISP will come into effect.
  • Intellicad does not have a provision in its OPTIONS menu to automatically load ACADUI for every drawing (it only loads on initial start-up) so to load ACADUI in another drawing enter (load “icad”) at the Command: prompt.  This will be corrected in a later release.
  • Add ACADUI’s Accelerator keys to your existing menu.  Command: CUSTOMIZE >> KEYBOARD>>IMPORT.>>UIKEYS.ICK.  Browse for UIKEYS  in C:\ACADUI\LISP.  (Easier to find if you click on Files of type: ICK.)  Then click IMPORT.
  • Press F11 to check that accelerators are working.
  • Type L (for Layer) press [spacebar] then press [spacebar] again.   If ACADUI's Layer dialogue box opens then that’s it.
  • If you wish to uninstall ACADUI delete the ACADUI folder and CUSTOMIZE>>KEYBOARD>>RESET and yo u will be back to normal.
  • Restore your saved profie and you will be back to normal.

Automatic optimization of program environment:

ACADUI automatically sets up some AutoCAD system variables that enable ACADUI to function correctly and give you a better working environment.
We strongly recommend that you set your screen background to black (for easy color recognition and maximum clarity) but that is your choice.
Save the settings created as a personal User Profile under a suitable name such as “ACADUI” or your own name.
Any special lisp functions of your own may be moved to C:\ACADUI\Mylisp
ACADUI Alias definitions will replace any matching AutoCAD or Intellicad aliases defined in the programs but their source files remain unaltered and will take effect again if ACADUI is not loaded.   Personal preferences for system variables can be set in #MYVARS.LSP.  Personal Autolisp functions can be autoloaded from #MYLISP.LSP. Rarely some unrelated third-party programs may take over the Autolisp environment and affect the running of ACADUI.  Obtain advice from the custom software vendor.  .
